Through public education teens have become more alert to symptoms of depression, which in return causes the rate that it is reported to increase. Depression rates in teens continually increase due to the overuse of social media and increased visits to the doctor lead to more documented reports. Spending countless hours online is not only a distraction, but it may cause teens to isolate themselves from their real life offline – leading to feelings of anxiety and depression.
